Rubber Washers and Ceramic Glands

A few days ago the bathroom tap began to leak. The tap in question was connected to the sink which meant it was used several times a day when washing hands or brushing teeth which contributed greatly to its recent condition. Earlier today I went to Wickes to purchase a bag of Rubber Washers for £1.15 thinking it would be sufficient to repair the tap, however after several hours trying to prize the old tap open (it was stuck in with glue or something) I discovered that the Rubber Washers wouldn't work.

In the end I had to go back to Wickes and get a Ceramic Gland 3/8-1/2in 10mm spline which was only available in a pack of two for £12.99 minus the £1.15 for the unused washers and  the tap is as good as new. There is however a noticeable gap between the top of the tap and the bottom of the lever but the tap works fine and there's no leak which could have lead to a possible £1000 fine if nothing had been done about it!
